Lockdown Learning
Caroline Jordan Headmistress
In a moment that will go down in history, on one quiet Friday in March 2020, Headington closed its doors to the majority of its children and reopened the following Monday as a predominantly virtual school.
With many parents working as frontline medical staff or key workers, the School remained open to their children while staff in school and at home provided a full timetable of remote learning for all. Huge shifts in pace, working pattern and attitude were required for both staff and pupils with everyone experiencing their own lockdown challenges. Some girls went to school every day throughout both lockdowns while others missed out on months of in-person learning.
As we returned to school in September 2020, the impact of COVID-19 continued with many of the special activities, trips and events which would normally take place cancelled or restricted, while COVID-related absence among staff and pupils continued to cause disruption. Just a few months later, in January 2021, we found ourselves in lockdown once more, with girls now seasoned experts at accessing online learning.
Many boarders found themselves unable to go home for much longer periods of time due to quarantine restrictions, while others found themselves logging in from different timezones to join their classes remotely.
Throughout the pandemic, staff worked incredibly hard to provide girls with the best possible learning experience and I cannot underestimate the efforts which went into making sure that our Headington community could remain together, apart. I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on an experience which I truly believe will shape this generation. I would also like to pay tribute to their resilience, their compassion, their empathy, their resolve and their sheer hard work and praise them for everything they have achieved over this period. I could not be more proud of our girls, staff and parents who ensured that, despite every difficulty we encountered, we emerged from the pandemic as a strong, supportive community.
