Drama Scholarships
What are we looking for in a Drama Scholar?
Successful Drama Scholar candidates are young actors with impressive ability and potential. They can demonstrate commitment to drama beyond the curriculum, such as active participation in a drama group and Speech and Drama lessons and have a keen interest in theatre.
We would expect potential scholars to demonstrate:
- strong performance skills
- creativity
- the ability to be a highly-effective member of a theatre company
They must also have:
- an impressive performance record (this can be within school productions)
- wide experience of live theatre
- excellent analytical skills in terms of theatre
What do we offer?

- An annual scholars’ theatre trip
- An annual scholars’ performance
- A place on the scholars’ board displayed in the Theatre showcasing their achievements
What do we expect from our Drama Scholars?
For them to:
- feature in major school productions
- take on a range of challenging roles
- demonstrate a passion for theatre by attending live performances, reading plays and reviews
- support the work of the Drama Department
- work as part of a team
- assist the Drama Department on Open Mornings and at community events
Selection and assessment procedure
Potential Drama Scholars will be invited to audition. The process for each audition will include:
11+
- A performance of a prepared monologue, selected from a set provided by Headington Rye Oxford
- A group improvisation workshop
- An interview
13+
- A performance of a prepared monologue from a full length published play, selected by the candidate. Candidates are advised to read the entire play.
- A group improvisation workshop
- An interview
Overseas candidates must submit video evidence of practical assessments by Friday 17th January 2025 for 11+ and Friday 1st November 2024 for 13+. These should be sent to scholarships@headingtonschool.com. Overseas candidates will be interviewed by Zoom/ Google Meet.
