What are we looking for in a Dance Scholar?

Successful Dance Scholar candidates are young dancers with impressive technical ability and aptitude in performance, choreography and appreciation. They can demonstrate a passion and commitment for Dance, through participation in a range of Dance classes and a keen interest in live performances. They are adaptable and creative, act as role models for Dance and show a willingness to lead in choreography and the organisation of Dance events. They often choose to take advantage of GCSE or A Level Dance options to further their knowledge and appreciation of Dance.

What do we expect from our Dance Scholars?

For them to:

  • feature in major school productions
  • take on a range of challenging roles
  • demonstrate a passion for Dance by attending live performances
  • take part in a range of extra-curricular Dance classes, including any Dance Scholars' classes
  • support the work of the Dance Department
  • work as part of a team
  • be a positive role model for other pupils
  • assist the Dance Department on Open Mornings and at community events

Selection and assessment procedure

Potential Dance Scholars of eligible standard will be invited to a practical assessment and interview.

They will need to:

  • perform a one to one and a half minute solo in a Dance genre of their choice
  • take part in a technical class
  • complete a choreographic task
  • bring evidence of recent successes and achievements to support their applications
  • be prepared to discuss their experience, passion and aspirations in Dance

Overseas candidates must submit video evidence of practical assessments by Friday 16th January 2026 for 11+ and Friday 31st October 2025 for 13+. These should show two different genres of dance, one including a 60 to 90 second solo in a dance genre of their choice and one showcasing a separate style of dance. The second submission should be no longer than the first but may be shorter. These should be sent to scholarships@headingtonschool.com. Overseas candidates selected for interview once video evidence has been reviewed will be interviewed by Zoom/ Google Meet and do not need to attend the scholarship assessment in person.
