Head of Sixth Form

Mrs Barrett is responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of Sixth Form life to ensure that you have every opportunity to excel in all areas. She works closely with the Form Tutors and Heads of Year to get to know you as an individual, to understand the challenges and pressures you face, to applaud your successes and to encourage and support you to fulfil your personal potential.

Mrs Barrett has overall responsibility for your academic life in the Sixth Form, as well as supervising the UCAS application process. With the Form Tutors, the Heads of Year and the Sixth Form Housemistresses, she will carefully monitor your progress and provide overall support for you in the new challenges of A Level and BTEC study and revision. You must get her approval for any change to your programme of study and she will also monitor how effectively students are using their study periods. Mrs Barrett is also responsible for the UCAS and Next Steps programmes and manages the Overseas Universities Programme run by Mr Stephenson. Mrs Barrett will be there to support you on every step of your academic journey in the Sixth Form from day one to A Level and BTEC results day and beyond.

She also has overall responsibility for your personal development and well-being within and beyond the classroom. She will also help you develop your Headington Rye Diploma, where you will evidence your achievements at the school in preparation for life beyond Headington Rye Oxford. She will liaise with the Form Tutors and Heads of Year to understand your individual needs and concerns and is on hand to offer you extra support and guidance, should you need it. She will work closely with the Prefects and supervise the smooth running of Headington Rye Sixth Form Centre. She will oversee the Sixth Form PSHE programme and will organise events within and beyond the Sixth Form.

Heads of Year

Miss Knott and Mr McKenna are responsible for working in partnership with your tutors to oversee all aspects of your academic life and pastoral care at Headington Rye Oxford.

They have specialist knowledge of the Sixth Form and will be on hand to help you achieve your very best. Please do call on any of us for support, advice and information.

For Year 12, your Form Tutor, Head of Year and the wider sixth form team are all here to support you with the transition to Sixth Form. They will help foster the self-motivation, self-discipline and self-reliance that are an essential part of moving from Key Stage Four to Key Stage Five and also from school to further education and the world of work. The new academic and social experiences of Sixth Form offer exciting opportunities and challenges and the team in Headington Rye Oxford Sixth Form are here to help students ensure that they enjoy the freedoms and rigours that it offers. We carefully guide students through this transition from advice to possible subject changes, planning your working week with tutors to participation in the extensive Academic Skills programme which is specifically designed not only to help students adapt to Year 12 study but also to prepare them with skills that will help them at university and in the world of work.

Our Next Steps programme launches in January of Year 12 and by the start of Year 13, Miss Knott and Mrs Barrett will work with your Form Tutor to guide you in your final the vital decisions that you make about your next step after Headington Rye Oxford. They will closely monitor your UCAS application and your academic progress so that you can achieve your very best next summer. As one of the senior pupils in the School, your leadership and positive example are fundamental to the school’s success. We will work with you to ensure that you gain a breadth of experience and skills in your final year at Headington Rye Oxford, in order that you are confident and well prepared for your future adult life beyond the School.

Your Form Tutor

Your Form Tutor is the member of staff who oversees and knows most closely the details of your academic and personal development and, if you’re a boarder, will work in conjunction with your Boarding Housemistress. They will monitor all aspects of your Sixth Form life to encourage, guide and inspire you to fulfil your potential.

You will meet with your Form Tutor at 10.25 am every morning in your designated form room and they will guide your form time or accompany you to assembly. They will monitor your attendance and any requests for absence. Your tutor will be the anchor point of your Sixth Form PSHE programme and, if you are in Year 13, will write your UCAS reference.

If you or your parents or guardians have any concerns about your progress or welfare, your Form Tutor should be your first point of contact.

Your Form

Your form will consist of girls from your year group who study a variety of different courses and have a diverse range of interests and enthusiasms. Each Year 12 tutor group is paired with a Year 13 tutor group and each Wednesday, they will join together for our 'Wellbeing Wednesdays' which allows girls to learn from each other, share experiences and form relationships across the Sixth Form.

We hope that you will enjoy getting to know one another, learning to work as a team and supporting and encouraging each other. With your Form Tutor you will organise form activities and socialising initiatives. As a Headington Rye sixth former, we know you will want to support your peers’ ambitions, celebrate successes and support them when times are challenging. A happy Sixth Form needs a healthy network of good relationships and a positive and united form group is central to this.
