Executive Summary

We require an inspirational teacher of Clarinet to deliver individual tuition to pupils across our Prep and Senior schools throughout the academic year. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic teacher and practitioner, willing to work with a variety of age groups and run ensembles. They will demonstrate and support the study of a wide range of techniques and have a willingness to look beyond traditional repertoire.

Currently, one day of teaching per week is required, with the potential for more.

Music at Headington Rye Oxford

Headington Rye has a vibrant Music Department with a large dedicated team of academic and specialist instrumental tutors, as well as Heads of Section. The Prep and Senior departments are housed in purpose-built Music Schools, with excellent practice and teaching facilities, performance and rehearsal spaces, and a recording studio.

We offer a full academic programme (including GCSE and A Level Music) and teach over 400 instrumental lessons a week, supported by a full-time Administrator. We facilitate busy concert programmes throughout the year and aim to provide performance opportunities for all musicians, regardless of their experience. Pupils are committed, high-achieving and polite.

Role Description

The Visiting Teacher of Clarinet role is initially for one day of teaching per week, starting January 2026

Key Responsibilities

  • deliver individual lessons to students in the Prep and Senior Schools
  • provide support with ensembles and concerts
  • attend one parents’ evening in the year and write progress reports

Person Specification

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • an instrumental diploma, teaching qualification or proven teaching experience
  • experience of delivering individual tuition in a school context or similar
  • experience of preparing pupils for ABRSM and Trinity examinations
  • experience of working with clarinet, woodwind ensembles and/or bands

Desirable

  • active professional performer with knowledge of the music industry

Personal Attributes and Skills

  • excellent communication and teaching skills
  • an understanding of each individual’s needs and an ability to adapt to meet these
  • an ability to inspire and motivate students
  • a good team player
  • willingness to support the Head of Woodwind and Brass

Pension

Contributory membership of the School’s Support Staff Pension Scheme with a School contribution of up to 9.95 per cent upon successful completion of six months’ service.

Salary

The full-time equivalent salary for a Visiting Music Teacher is currently £45,766 which is based on working 36 hours per week and delivering 30 lessons per academic year for each pupil. Pro rata salaries are calculated based on the per cent of pupils allocated each term and will be advised as soon as possible after the commencement of the new term.
