Art Scholarships
What are we looking for in an Art Scholar?
Our Art Scholars have a variety of different artistic backgrounds and excel in different techniques, styles and media. Some may come to us with significant artistic experience while others may be at the early stages of their artistic journey. Applications from those with a passion for Fashion and Textiles are also welcomed.
We would expect potential scholars to be able to demonstrate:
- good drawing skills and a willingness to practise and develop these skills
- an ability to experiment with different media and a wide colour palette
- independence and imagination in their work

- Regular attendance at one of our art clubs
- Entry to art competitions
- Promotion of their own work through exhibitions and displays

- Art department assistance on Open Mornings and at community events
- An outstanding attitude towards learning in lessons leading to taking one or more creative arts subjects at GCSE and beyond
Selection and assessment procedure
What do I need to submit for the Art Scholarship Assessment?
- a portfolio of any appropriate dimensions containing a selection of no more than 10 pieces of refined work in any media of individual’s choice, plus one or two sketchbooks
- external candidates should also submit a teacher reference.
What does the Art Scholarship Assessment involve?
Candidates will be invited to attend a first round assessment in the Art Department that will include:
- an assessed art workshop activity
- a drawing exercise from observation
Selected candidates will be invited back on a later date to attend a second round assessment that will include an interview with the Director of Art and a portfolio discussion.
Overseas candidates must submit their portfolios electronically by Friday 17th January 2025 for 11+ and Friday 1st November 2024 for 13+. Candidates attending the entrance day in person should bring their portfolio with them for discussion at interview. Portfolios and references should be sent to scholarships@headingtonschool.com. Overseas candidates will be interviewed by Zoom/Google Meet.
