Music Scholarships
What are we looking for in a Music Scholar?
At Headington Rye Oxford our musicians perform regularly at a high standard on a wide range of instruments in many different styles and ensembles. Our Music Scholars are truly exceptional young musicians who lead music in the School and encourage other musicians.
We would expect potential scholars to demonstrate:
- enthusiasm
- skill
- a willingness to engage in ensembles and music-making
- passion
- leadership skills
Candidates must meet the standard specified below to be eligible to apply for a music scholarship:
- Grade 7 or above in one or more instruments, regular participation in ensembles and considerable performance experience.

- Access to scholars-only talks, masterclasses and trips to hear professional musicians

What do we expect from our Music Scholars?
- Participation in a range of appropriate ensembles, orchestras and choirs
- Lead roles in musical performances
- Instrumental scholars will join Symphony Orchestra
- Vocal scholars will join Chamber Choir
- Consistent practice with the goal of improved technical ability
- Maintain high academic standards, balancing academic studies with musical commitments
- Support the work of the Music Department
- Work as part of a team
- Assist the Music Department on Open Mornings and at community events
Selection and assessment procedure
How do I apply?
External students must register their interest in a Music Scholarship by noon on Friday 11th October 2024, using the appropriate form sent by the Admissions teamin the Autumn Term. Existing students interested in a Music Scholarship or the Sonia Vichniakov Award must complete the appropriate form sent to them by the Headmistress in the Autumn Term.
Overseas applicants must submit video evidence of practical assessments by Saturday 9th November 2024 to scholarships@headingtonschool.com. They will be interviewed via Zoom/ Google Meet by the Director of Music. All external candidates attending the entrance day at Headington and all internal candidates must submit details of their performance pieces and email/ post any required accompaniments (sheet music) to scholarships@headingtonschool.com by Saturday 9th November 2024.
Assessment
Potential Music Scholars of eligible standard will be invited to a practical assessment and interview at Headington. They will need to:
- perform either two contrasting pieces on one instrument or one piece on two different instruments
- complete viva voce (oral test) and aural/sight-reading tests
- be interviewed by the Director of Music
All those awarded Music Scholarships will also be considered for the Sonia Vichniakov Music Award.
