COMMUNICATION

You

Keep yourself informed of what is happening in Headington Rye Oxford’s Sixth Form every day:

  • log into your school email account at least twice a day and read your year group briefing
  • follow good practice in your email and social media accounts
  • take the time to have a conversation each morning with your Form Tutor at Form Time
  • respond to relevant daily messages from your Form Tutor
  • listen out for notices in assembly
  • make sure you check your form's Google Classroom each day for any important messages

Parents and Guardians

Parents and guardians are encouraged to contact Headington Rye Oxford staff if they have any queries or concerns. Your Form Tutor, Head of Year or Boarding Housemistress should be their first point of call. They may also wish to contact the Head of Sixth Form. Parents and guardians are welcome to phone us but they may find that it is more convenient to email, as staff have busy teaching timetables. The relevant staff email addresses can be found here.

Parents and guardians can be reassured that we will be in touch as soon as we have a concern about your progress or welfare.

Planned absence

Know in advance that you have an obligation or appointment that will require you to miss school? This might be:

  • a driving test or other external examination (all driving lessons and theory tests should be scheduled after the end of the school day)
  • university interviews
  • university open days. Where possible these should be scheduled at weekends or during school holidays. We will give you permission to miss a maximum of three school days for open days across your sixth form (with the exception of Prize Giving and Foundation Day). This could be three in Year 12 or two in Year 12 and one in Year 13 or three in Year 13 or two in Year 13 and one in Year 12. Parents are asked to email requests to Mrs Palin at least 48 hours in advance and you must complete an absence form on each occasion
  • medical appointments that cannot be scheduled for out of school time

You need to get permission for all such leaves of absence by completing an absence form, available from Mrs Palin, at least 48 hours before the planned absence. Don’t forget to catch up on any work missed and if you have any duties, find a friend to cover for you.

Please note: term dates are published in advance and full attendance is expected; for international boarders sponsored on a Child Student Visa, full attendance is a UKVI visa requirement. All requests for leave of absence for vacations in term-time must be made, in advance, to the Headmistress. It is expected that no student will miss school in order to take a holiday and flights home must not be booked for before the final day of term. Absence from Graduation and Foundation Day at the end of the Summer Term must also be approved in advance by the Headmistress.

Leaving the campus during school hours

Sixth formers should arrive in school for their first formal commitment, whether that is Period 1, Period 2, or form time at 10.15 am if they don't have lessons before then. Year 13 students have the privilege of going off campus but for safety reasons must sign out in the Sixth Form Centre. Year 12 students may go off campus from 12.00 pm but are expected to be in school until then. Students must sign out when they leave and then sign in again when they return. Boarders may not return to their study-bedrooms until Lesson 4.

Failure to adhere to these rules will result in losing the privilege to go off campus during school hours or an appropriate boarding sanction.
