HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Healthy lifestyle
Your health and welfare are at the heart of Headington Rye Oxford’s success and making healthy choices is part of taking a mature role in the adult world. Your healthy mind must be sustained by a healthy body, which is why it is vital that you take regular exercise, including your school PE lessons and we hope you will take full advantage of the Dance and Fitness Centre too. When using the Centre, you must wear appropriate clothing for the gym, be in groups of at least three girls and check that there is a member of staff in the building. You cannot do weights unless there is a member of staff supervising you in the room.
Alcohol, smoking and vaping are of course banned in school. With parental permission, sixth formers are allowed to consume alcohol with a meal at social events. This is to help introduce them to responsible attitudes to alcohol in a safe setting.
The Headington Rye Oxford campus is a non-smoking area and any student who smokes or vapes within sight of the School risks suspension. Our aim is for you to develop a holistic sense of how to make the best choices to ensure that you live a healthy life. Any student who breaches the School’s rules relating to smoking, alcohol and drugs can expect to face the consequences, in accordance with the School’s policy.
Feeling unwell
If you feel unwell, don’t worry as there is always someone who can help:
- The Health Centre is open 8.30 am - 4.30 pm daily, Monday to Friday for day girl access and remains open in the evenings and overnight for our boarders. During the weekends the opening hours are reduced and boarding staff will triage and respond to any medical needs.
- We have Day Matrons in the boarding houses.
- If you feel unwell during the day you must go to the Health Centre who will assess whether you need to go home. You need to sign out if you go home.
- For boarders after 6.00 pm, go to the House office to see a member of staff on duty.
- If you feel unwell during the night, see who is on duty in your house and ring the ‘night’ bell for their flat.
- All personal medication must be left with the house staff, to be kept in the locked medical cabinet. Medication must not be kept in dorms, with the exception of inhalers for asthmatics.
Unexpected absence and illness
If you are absent from school without prior warning, for example because of illness, then your parent or guardian must telephone the School before 9.15 am on 01865 759158 or email Mrs Palin at sfc@headington.org to explain your absence. After 9.15 am, Mrs Palin will telephone your parent or guardian if you have failed to register and your whereabouts are unknown.
Talking things through

If you speak to a member of staff in private, we can’t promise that what you say will remain confidential. If information does have to be passed on to a third party, we will always inform you of our intention to do so. Medical confidentiality with the school doctor is generally observed. However, the Health Centre may pass on medical information to those they feel need to know.
