WELCOME!
Welcome to this year’s Headingtonian, the magazine for our alumnae community.
The theme of this year’s Headingtonian is future. With the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and increasing automation of jobs, we believe that future generations must be creative thinkers. Creativity is a uniquely human and future-proof skill and increasingly, employers are seeking creative minds to solve complex problems. At Headington, we focus on preparing pupils for the world as it will be, not just as it is now and help them develop the skills they need to adapt and be ready. From an early age, we put creative thinking at the heart of the curriculum and focus on building resilience, kindness, empathy and emotional intelligence alongside their technical and academic skills. What makes a Headington girl? One who is curious and creative, confident yet collaborative, always compassionate and definitely courageous.
We welcomed a team of inspectors from ISI (Independent Schools’ Inspectorate) to Headington in January 2023. They reviewed every aspect of school life, talking to many pupils and members of staff, looking at work and visiting lessons, extra-curricular activities, form meetings and assemblies and both the Prep and Senior School. I am delighted to tell you that both Schools have been judged Excellent in all areas; you can read both the Senior School and Prep School reports here.
Headington is in a very strong position and demand for places remains high. The number of pupils in the Senior School will be the largest ever in September and we are also seeing increased interest from girls wishing to join rowing at Headington as boarders, based on HSOBC’s excellent reputation for developing scholar athletes and the new Boathouse which is currently being built at Long Wittenham.
I am immensely proud of everything our pupils achieve and we are always delighted to welcome Headingtonians back to School to inspire the next generation. We love seeing how your careers develop and learning about the impact you are making in the world. I hope you enjoy reading the articles and updates in this year’s Headingtonian and we look forward to welcoming you back to School for Headingtonians’ Day on Saturday 10th June.

It has been a busy year at Headington, with events and opportunities designed to strengthen, support and shape the unique relationship we all have with Headington.
Firstly, I would like to pass on my congratulations to Caroline, all the staff and pupils at Headington on the excellent inspection report. The girls are an absolute credit to the School and it is wonderful that the inspectors recognise what a happy, considerate and successful place it is. As always, the Headington spirit shines through.
We were delighted to welcome so many alumnae back to Headingtonians’ Day in June 2022 after not being able to get together for this special occasion for two years, and it was particularly memorable to celebrate with those marking their 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 years of leaving School in 2020, 2021 or 2022. The date for this year’s Headingtonians’ Day is Saturday 10th June and if you have not already done so, please sign up here using code RSVP.
It is very encouraging to hear all the news from School and I have thoroughly enjoyed attending various Headington events over the last year. Looking back, two such occasions particularly stand out for me - the magical Carol Service at Christ Church Cathedral which always marks the start of the festive season, and the excellent Drama Scholars’ Play Second Person Narrative by Jemma Kennedy, which was thought provoking, brilliantly acted and a showcase of real talent.
If you haven’t been back to Headington recently, I do encourage you to come and see for yourself. The opportunities available to all the pupils today, together with the amazing facilities including the award winning Library (converted from the old Gymnasium), the Dance & Fitness Centre, the Hive and the new Food and Nutrition Kitchens are truly impressive and a far cry from when I was a pupil here in the 1970s. I would relish the chance to study here again now!
Headington is a wonderful, happy school with a fantastic, close supportive community and I am very proud to call myself a Headingtonian. Please continue to share your news and I look forward to meeting you at one of our events over the next year.
